What is pet play? It's a kink dynamic in which one adult takes the role of a pet and another takes the role of their owner. The pet might be a kitten, a puppy, a bunny or a pony. The owner is the one with the collar in their hand, and with it the name, the rules, and the praise and correction that come with keeping something that's theirs.

What is pet play, in kink terms
In kink and BDSM, pet play is a consensual roleplay between adults where one person becomes the pet and the other becomes their owner, handler or trainer. The pet trades human manners for animal ones, in whatever measure suits them. The owner takes charge the way you'd take charge of something you love and are responsible for. It sits inside dominance and submission, pet on the submissive side and owner on the dominant, and it brings its own furniture with it: a collar, a pet name, a leash, rules about speech and position, and rewards for being good. Human pet play is the same thing under a longer name, coined by someone who wanted to be very clear that no animals are involved.
It can be sexual, and often is, but it doesn't have to be. Some people want the collar and the lap and nothing more. Some want the training to end in bed. Plenty want both, depending on the night. What every version shares is the exchange underneath it. The pet stops being in charge of themselves, and the owner starts.
In a dating bio it means one of two things. They want to be kept, or they want to keep someone. The word alone won't tell you which, so ask.
What happens in a pet play scene
A pet scene starts with the collar. Sometimes it's a real one, buckled on with a word that means we're starting; sometimes it's a phrase, a name, or a hand on the back of the neck. From then on the pet answers to their pet name and the rules of pet space apply, which might mean no words, only sounds, or no standing, or nothing at all without being told first.
After that the owner does what owners do. They call the pet over and reward them for coming. They teach a position and drill it until it's automatic. They feed the pet by hand, brush them, clip on a leash and walk them to the next room for no reason except to show that they can. They praise, good pet, that's my good pet, in a voice that reaches somewhere words to an adult never do. They correct with a sharp no, a hand on the collar, a treat withheld. And they touch, constantly, because a pet is something you handle.
The species sets the tone. Puppies are eager, loud and tireless, and want to hear they've pleased you. Kittens are affectionate on their own schedule, a little bratty, and won over by patience. Bunnies are skittish and soft and want to be held still. Ponies are formal and disciplined, trained in tack and gait. Ears, tail, paws and a hood are optional decoration. Plenty of pets get all the way into the headspace with nothing but a collar and someone who means it.
Why people do pet play
Ask a pet why and you'll get some version of the same answer, which is that it's simpler in there. A pet isn't expected to be clever or productive or in charge of anything, themselves included. Somebody else decides when they eat, where they sit and whether they've been good. That's a relief that's hard to explain to anyone whose shoulders haven't dropped the moment a collar closed.
Belonging is the other half. Obedience is only part of it; a pet is kept, the collar says mine, and for a lot of pets that one word does more than any command. Praise lands differently too. Pet vs owner
Pet play is a pair. The pet belongs, and the owner is who they belong to, the dominant who sets the rules, gives the name, praises, corrects and looks after what's theirs. Some owners go by handler or trainer instead. A handler manages a pet in the moment, a trainer builds behaviours over weeks, and an owner does both and adds the possessive part.

Pet vs slave, primal prey and plain submissive
A pet is kept and cared for. A slave serves. The master or mistress dynamic runs on protocol and duties, with obedience treated as a discipline, and the slave is there to be useful. A pet's job is to be a good pet, which is closer to being adored than to being useful. Both wear a collar, but a slave's collar is a uniform and a pet's is a name tag.
Primal prey is animal in a different way. Prey wants to be chased, caught and overpowered by someone who couldn't help themselves; a pet wants to be owned by someone who chose to. Prey is the hunt and the pin. Pet is the lap afterwards. Some people are high on both.
And a pet is one kind of submissive rather than a separate thing. Submissive describes wanting to hand over control. Pet describes the shape that handing over takes, with a collar, a name, a species and an owner attached. How to tell if you're a pet
You don't need a collar, or a partner who has said the word out loud. The signs come first. Being called a good pet, a good girl or a good boy does something to you that being called talented never has. You want to be touched absent-mindedly, a hand in your hair while someone reads, for an hour. The idea of a collar makes you go quiet, and the quiet isn't fear. When a partner takes charge you feel relief rather than any urge to push back, and the next thought is what do they want me to do now. You've caught yourself wanting to be fed, brushed, walked or put to bed, and felt slightly silly and very warm about it.
