BDSM test: dominant, submissive, or switch?
This BDSM test is for the ones who lead, the ones who kneel, and the ones who do both, and it ends with a brief on how a partner should handle you.
Free, no sign-up, about 4 minutes
Your side first, then what you do with it.
The first half settles your lean. The second scores both sides of seven role pairs, the kinks that landed and how you like to play, 29 bars in all. A brief at the end tells a partner how to handle you.
18+ only. We store your scores, not your answers, and the result stays private unless you share the link.

How this BDSM test works
Most BDSM tests ask forty questions about whether you like whips. This one drops you into scenes and watches what you do, who speaks first, who waits, who ends up pinned. The card deck then settles the pairs (Brat and Brat tamer, Rigger and Rope bunny, Master and Slave) and the dials fix how strict, how public and how fixed your role is. You come out with a Dominant, Submissive and Switch score, all fourteen pair bars, and a brief for whoever ends up opposite you.
What the BDSM test measures
For the D/s question the bars that matter are the first three and the seven pairs, which cover where you sit in a power exchange and what happens once you're there. The interest and play bars fill in the rest. Tap any bar for what it means and how to tell if it's you.
Your role (3)
Where you sit. The gap between Dominant and Submissive sets your lean, and Switch gets its own score rather than being the leftover.
You want to lead the scene, decide what happens and hold the other person to it.
You want to hand over control to someone you trust and follow where they take you.
You enjoy both sides of the power exchange and move between them with the right partner.
Role pairs (14)
Each pair has a dom side and a sub side, scored separately, so you see your place on both.
You enjoy a partner who pushes back, and you enjoy putting them back in their place even more.
You submit, eventually, but you make them earn it with attitude, teasing and defiance.
Giving pain or intensity to a willing partner is a big part of what turns you on.
Receiving pain or intensity from someone you trust is a big part of what turns you on.
You like tying people up, for the craft of it and for the control it gives you.
You like being tied, the helplessness of it and the attention of the person doing the tying.
You enjoy having someone who belongs to you, with a collar and rules and the care and correction that go with them.
You enjoy belonging to someone who keeps you, trains you, praises you and looks after you.
You enjoy putting a willing partner down with words and treatment, inside a scene they asked for.
Being talked down to, used or humiliated by the right person is a turn-on for you.
You want to chase, pin and take, and you'd rather growl than give a speech.
You want to be chased, caught and overpowered by someone who couldn't help themselves.
You want full authority, with protocol and obedience and a partner who is there to serve.
You want to serve completely, under rules and protocol, for someone who deserves it.
What you are into (8)
The activities, whichever side you hold. They fill in what the roles leave out.
Rope, cuffs, chains, anything that takes your movement away.
Sensation by hand or by tool, from spanking to paddles, floggers and crops.
Being told you're good, or telling them, gets you further than anything else.
Harsh words, embarrassment and being made small, all of it wanted and agreed to.
Edging, chastity and permission, where someone else decides when, or whether.
The outfit is half the scene, whether that's latex, leather, heels, a collar or a uniform.
Being watched, or watching, turns the heat up.
A story with parts to play, like teacher and student, boss and employee, or captor and captive.
How you play (4)
Set by the dials. Protocol and Switching matter most for D/s, and Public and Novelty shape the scene around it.
How much structure you want, anywhere from casual and playful to titles, rules and positions.
Where you want it to happen, whether strictly behind closed doors or out where someone might notice.
Whether you want your known favourites or something you've never tried.
How it compares
The classic 10-minute tests set the standard, and this one keeps their best idea, bars instead of a single label, and changes most of the rest. Scenes and swipes replace forty agreement rows. The first half finds your lean, the second half only asks what your side leaves open, and the scores are normalised per path so a dom and a sub both reach a fair 0 to 100.
The ending is where the two part ways. The classic stops at the percentages. This one adds a brief on how a partner should handle you, a card you can share, and a character built from your answers that every AI partner on KinkSim reads before their first message.
Questions, answered
- Am I dominant, submissive or a switch?
- The test scores all three separately, 0 to 100, then works out your lean from the gap between Dominant and Submissive. Fifteen points or more calls it one way or the other. Anything closer reads as Switch, and a high Switching dial tips a modest gap the same way. Most people aren't a clean 100 and 0, so the bars show the mix instead of rounding you off to a label.
- Is this the dominant or submissive test?
- Yes, and it's the first thing the test settles. Six core scenes put you where someone has to lead, someone has to follow and someone gets to push back, and your choices there set the Dominant, Submissive and Switch bars. The next six ask only about your side. A submissive lean gets Brat, Pet, Rope bunny and Slave questions, a dominant lean gets Brat tamer, Owner, Rigger and Master.
- What are the BDSM role pairs?
- There are seven pairs, each with a dom side and a sub side: Brat tamer and Brat (defiance, and putting it down), Sadist and Masochist (giving and taking intensity), Rigger and Rope bunny (tying and being tied), Owner and Pet (keeping and belonging), Degrader and Degradee (words that put someone down, by request), Primal hunter and Primal prey (chase and capture), Master or Mistress and Slave (full authority and full service). Both sides get scored, so a Switch can see where they sit on each one.
- Can I be dominant and a masochist?
- Yes, and the bars were built with you in mind. Role is about who holds control, sensation is about what you enjoy feeling, and the test never mixes the two. A dominant who likes to be hurt on their own terms, a submissive who'd rather be praised than pushed, a rigger who can't stand impact, all of them show up as separate bars instead of cancelling each other out.
- How is this different from the classic BDSM test?
- It's shorter, it adapts, and it ends somewhere else. The classic 10-minute tests use forty or so agreement rows and cover everything anyone has ever named. This one is scenes, swipes and dials, and it only asks the second half of its questions about the side you lean toward. At the end you get a brief on how a partner should handle you and a character built from your answers, where the classic gives you a list of percentages and a goodbye.
- Is the BDSM test free, and do I need an account?
- Free, and no. There's no sign-up before it or during it, and you get a result link you can keep or share. Signing up only comes into it afterwards, if you want the result kept on an account, or you build a character from it and want a profile photo for them.
- How long is the BDSM test?
- About four minutes. It saves as you go on this device, so a phone call in the middle doesn't cost you your answers.
- I have never done BDSM. Will the test still work?
- Yes. The scenes ask what you'd want to happen, not what has happened. If you've only read about it, or only thought about it at 2 a.m., answer for the version of you in the scene. Curious is a real answer on every card, and a curious-heavy profile produces a partner brief that opens slowly instead of assuming experience.
- What does a high Sadist or Degrader score mean?
- That giving intensity, or putting a willing partner down with words, is part of what does it for you. Inside a negotiated scene those are wanted roles, with a queue of people looking for someone who does them well. The test doesn't moralise about it and neither does the partner brief, which tells the person opposite you what to ask for.
- Is the result private?
- The result page lives at a random link that search engines are told not to index. Your scores are stored and your raw answers aren't, apart from a fingerprint used to spot duplicates. None of it links to an account unless you sign up later and keep the result, and only people you hand the link to can see it.
- What can I do with my BDSM test result?
- Three things. Share it; the link carries a card with your top three bars. Build your character opens the KinkSim creator with dominance, openness and kinks already set, and writes a persona plus a partner brief from your answers that every AI partner reads before their first line. See who matches you lines up characters who play the other side of your top roles.
- How does the BDSM test differ from the kink test?
- They run on the same engine and land on the same result page; only the front door differs. The BDSM test is for where you sit in a power exchange, and the kink test is for the wider question of what you're into. Finish one and there's no reason to sit through the other.

The test sits at the top of the page. Your result gets its own link, and if you disagree with the lean it gives you, the bars are right there to argue with.
